Car will not start
A no-start is one of the easiest symptoms to narrow down, because the sound the car makes when you turn the key points at very different parts of the system.
Start with the sound
- Nothing at all, no lights
- Usually a completely flat battery, a loose or corroded battery terminal, or a bad main connection.
- Rapid clicking
- Classically low battery voltage. There is enough power for the starter solenoid to chatter, not enough to turn the engine.
- One loud click, no crank
- Points more at the starter motor or its solenoid than at the battery, especially if the lights stay bright.
- Cranks normally but never fires
- The battery and starter are doing their job. Attention moves to fuel, spark, or the security system.
- Cranks slowly, then stops
- Often a weak battery, a failing starter drawing too much current, or in some cases an engine that is mechanically tight.
What usually causes it
Battery
The most common single cause. Batteries typically last a few years and fail faster in heat. A battery can read close to normal voltage and still be unable to deliver the current needed to crank.
Battery terminals and grounds
Corrosion or a loose clamp can stop a perfectly good battery from working. This is one of the more common no-fault-found causes.
Starter motor
Starters usually fail gradually. Intermittent no-starts that come and go, or a single hard click, are typical.
Alternator
An alternator that is not charging leaves you with a flat battery. The clue is often that the car started fine yesterday and the battery is dead again today.
Fuel delivery
A failed fuel pump or a blocked filter gives a healthy crank with no start. Sometimes there is a brief catch and stall.
Security or immobiliser
Some vehicles will crank but refuse to fire if the key is not recognised. A warning light on the dash is often the giveaway.
Ignition components
Worn plugs or failing coils more often cause rough running than a full no-start, but a bad enough case will prevent starting.
Why this still needs a proper look
The reason a no-start needs a proper look is that several of these causes produce identical symptoms. A flat battery, a bad ground and a failing starter can all present as a click. Telling them apart takes measurement under load, not guesswork, and replacing the wrong part is how people end up paying twice.
