A warning light is on
A warning light tells you the car has noticed something. It rarely tells you what part has failed, and that gap is where most of the confusion and most of the wasted money happens.
Colour is the first signal
- Red
- Treat as urgent. Red is generally reserved for oil pressure, charging, brakes, coolant temperature and airbags. Stop safely and get advice before continuing.
- Amber or yellow
- Something needs attention but is not usually an immediate stop. Emissions, engine management, tyre pressure and ABS often live here.
- Flashing engine light
- A flashing check-engine light is more serious than a steady one and can indicate a misfire that may damage the catalytic converter. Reduce load and get it looked at.
- Green or blue
- Informational. These tell you a system is active, not that anything is wrong.
What usually causes it
A stored fault code, not a diagnosis
When a light comes on, the car stores a code. A code points at a circuit or a reading that is out of range. It names a symptom the car noticed, not the part to replace.
Sensors and the things they measure
A code naming a sensor often means the sensor is reporting something unexpected, which may be entirely correct. Replacing the sensor when the reading was true fixes nothing.
Emissions and fuel trim
Oxygen sensors, catalytic converters and evaporative-emissions faults are among the most common causes of a steady check-engine light. A loose fuel cap is a genuine and very cheap cause of an EVAP code.
Misfires
Worn plugs, failing coils or injector problems. Often felt as roughness at idle as well as seen on the dash.
ABS and traction lights
Frequently a wheel-speed sensor or its wiring. Worth attention because it can affect braking assistance.
Charging and battery lights
Usually the alternator or its belt. This one can leave you stranded, so it is not a light to leave for later.
Why this still needs a proper look
Reading the code is the beginning, not the end. The same code can be produced by a failed component, by wiring, by a connector, or by something upstream behaving badly. Proper diagnosis means reading live data, testing the circuit, and confirming the cause before anything is replaced. That is the difference between fixing the car once and replacing parts until the light goes out.
